Harriet's Hidden World

Harriet's Hat

About The Artist

(Or 'the crazy doll lady with all the piles of fabric and books'. )

I love making dolls, clothes, costumes... everything, really. I'm very good at making a mess! When I was little I made dolls & doll clothes all the time, by hand at first, then on the sewing machine. Some were knitted, some were even made of paper. Soft toys (plushies) were a favourite, too, in all manner of guises: bears, bunnies, elephants, a menagerie of colourful creatures, each made with love, care & loads of imagination.

My family are very creative, imaginative people who have always supported me in my endeavours. I have my own business now, custom making costumes for theatre, living history and other such pursuits, dressmaking & making collections of art dolls & toys.

I continue to learn something new every day.

I have chosen to do what I love doing best & to share it with you here, in Harriet's Hidden World. I do hope you like it :)

Some are based on historical dolls from the 18th century, some are purely born of whimsy. All are lovable!

About Harriet

Purple Frog Close-up

Harriet is named after my great-great-great grandmother, Harriet Bennett, who lost her parents at the tender age of four. She is made of papier mache, painted with acrylics and she has human hair (mine, of course!). Her clothes are removable so that I can use her to show people how ladies dressed in 1745. All her clothes are designed and made by me. They are handstitched and hand embroidered. Her wardrobe grows daily, and she's always finding pictures of new outfits that she wants me to make for her.

At her happiest sipping tea on the lawn, Harriet loves to be out in the garden but always wears a hat.

Plushies, beanies, soft toys - each with their own quirky personality. Good company on a rainy day :)
